Town hall bosses and police are cracking down on drivers who flout double yellow lines outside schools, putting children’s lives at risk.

Trafford council says it is stepping up enforcement action outside the borough’s schools following concerns over public safety.

The authority and Greater Manchester Police have received complaints that some parents are driving dangerously and parking across driveways and on double yellow lines outside primary schools during drop off and pick up times.

Now, they say the decision has been taken to take more action to help keep children safe.

The council has teamed up with GMP to advise parents at various schools to park and drive more considerately at schools and to take enforcement action where this is being ignored.

Officers from GMP have already written to parents to remind them of their responsibility regarding parking. Parents are asked to look at walking/cycling their children to school or to drop children off further from the school at a safe place to avoid driving up to the school entrance.

They say that those drivers who continue to block driveways or drive dangerously could be issued with warning known as a Section 59 Warning. After two section 59s this could result in the seizure of the offending vehicle.

To increase safety further, a number of School Streets projects have been put in place across Trafford to close vehicle access to schools for the start and end of day peak times.

Trafford council says it is committed to bringing in more School Street locations and need the support of parents to make this work.

Coun Aidan Williams, Trafford council’s executive member for climate change, said: “The safety of schoolchildren is clearly a top priority and we will not sit back and do nothing. Working with Greater Manchester Police, we will not hesitate to take action against those drivers who continue to break the law and put children at risk.

“Please do not drive dangerously and park illegally outside schools in our borough.”

Schools across Trafford which have trialled the School Streets scheme include Victoria Park Infant School, on Henshaw Street, Stretford;  Flixton Primary School, on Mardale Avenue; Urmston Grammar School on Newton Road; English Martyrs Primary School on Wycliffe Road, Urmston; Seymour Park Community Primary School on Northumberland Road, Old Traford; Tyntesfield Primary School on Alma Road and Moorlands Junior School on Temple Road, both in Sale.
